Teaching Experience

Teaching Mathematics in Vietnam was truly challenging. Unlike in my home country, the Philippines, where Mathematics is taught in English, Mathematics in Vietnam is taught in their mother tongue. The first challenge was translating the lesson I had to teach for the session. I had to translate and understand to fully comprehend and design the appropriate lesson plan. Thankfully, we had subject buddies who helped us with translations and understanding the textbooks. The second challenge was creating activities that are appropriate for the learners. On the first day of teaching, I could sense how students felt strange learning Mathematics in English. The terms used were unfamiliar too. But one piece of advice I got from my supervisor was to draw symbols on the board and use gestures. This advice helped me succeed in my following classes. In the following sessions, students became more engaged and confident as I applied lessons and strategies I learned from my previous classes. The classroom atmosphere gradually shifted from hesitation to active participation, indicating that learning was possible despite language differences. This experience taught me that effective teaching is rooted in responsiveness to learners’ needs. This #SEATeacherbySEAMEO experience helped me improve my instructional practices while deepening my understanding and perspective of teaching beyond borders.
